Getting to Know the Rock Player TV Guide

Live TV is wonderful when you know what is on. The TV Guide - sometimes called the EPG, for electronic programme guide - is how Rock Player tells you. It lays out channels and programmes in a familiar grid, so you can see what is playing now, what comes next and what you might want to come back for later.

This guide covers how to read it, how to move around it efficiently with a remote, and how to combine it with other Rock Player features.

Reading the grid

The TV Guide is arranged like a timetable:

  • Rows are channels.
  • Columns are time, moving from left to right.
  • Blocks within each row are individual programmes. The wider the block, the longer the programme.

The programme that is playing now sits closest to the current time. Highlight any block to see more about it.

Moving around with your remote

On the big screen, the TV Guide is built for remote-friendly navigation.

  • Up and down move between channels.
  • Left and right move backwards and forwards through time.
  • Select opens the highlighted programme or tunes to the channel.
  • Back steps out of the guide.

Move faster

If you are scrolling a long way, hold the direction button rather than pressing it repeatedly. Many remotes repeat the movement while held, which carries you through the grid much more quickly.

Narrow it down with categories

A full guide can be a lot to take in. Rock Player organises Live TV by categories, so you can focus on the kind of programming you are in the mood for. Choosing a category before you open the guide keeps the grid shorter and easier to scan.

Make the guide personal with Favourites

The fastest TV Guide is one that only contains the channels you actually watch. Add your regular channels to Favourites, and you will have a shortlist that is quick to browse every evening.

A good habit: whenever you find yourself returning to the same channel two or three times, add it to Favourites on the spot.

Plan ahead with reminders

Spotted something later in the evening? Set a reminder from the guide. Rock Player will let you know when it is about to begin, so you can carry on with whatever you are doing without watching the clock.

Record what you cannot watch

If a programme clashes with dinner or bedtime, Recordings lets you keep it for later. Recording from the guide is often the most natural place to do it, because you can see exactly when the programme starts and ends.

Look back with Catch-up

The guide is not only about what is next. Where catch-up is available for a channel, you can move backwards in time and play programmes that have already aired. It is a calm way to watch on your schedule rather than the broadcaster's.

Combine the guide with Multiview

If two things you care about are on at the same time, you do not always have to choose. Multiview lets you watch several screens at once, and the TV Guide helps you spot those overlaps in advance.

On phones and tablets

The TV Guide is available on Android phones and tablets too. On a smaller screen:

  • Swipe vertically to move between channels and horizontally to move through time.
  • Tap a programme for more detail.
  • Use search if you already know what you are looking for - it is often quicker than scrolling.

If the guide looks empty

Occasionally a channel may show no programme information. A few things to try:

  1. Wait a moment. Guide information loads in the background and can take a little time after the app starts.
  2. Check your connection. The guide needs the internet to refresh.
  3. Look at a different time. Some channels only list programmes for certain periods.

If something still looks wrong, message us via the WhatsApp chat on the website.

A simple evening routine

Here is how many Rock Player viewers use the guide:

  1. Open the TV Guide with the Favourites channels showing.
  2. Scan the next few hours and set reminders for anything that catches your eye.
  3. Set a recording for anything that clashes.
  4. Use Catch-up for the thing you missed yesterday.

Ten seconds of planning, and the rest of the evening takes care of itself.
