Setting Up a Big-Screen Living Room for Streaming

Rock Player's big-screen interface was designed for the sofa: generous spacing, clear type and remote-friendly navigation. A few thoughtful choices about your room can make that experience even better.
This guide covers screen placement, picture settings, connecting your device, your home network, sound and comfort.
Choosing your streaming device
Rock Player runs on Android TV, Google TV, Fire TV and Firestick devices, as well as Android phones and tablets. For a living room, any of the big-screen options works well:
- A smart TV with Android TV or Google TV built in keeps things tidy - no extra box.
- A Firestick or Fire TV device plugs into an HDMI port and is easy to move between rooms.
- An Android TV or Google TV streaming box often includes an ethernet port for a wired connection.
Install Rock Player from /get using our setup guides for each device.
Placing the screen
Height
The centre of the screen should be roughly at eye level when you are seated. Mounting a TV too high, such as above a fireplace, can make for an uncomfortable evening.
Distance
Sit far enough back that you can take in the whole screen without moving your head, but close enough to read text comfortably. Rock Player's interface is designed to be readable from a typical sofa distance.
Light
Avoid placing the TV opposite a bright window. If that is unavoidable, curtains or blinds make a large difference during the day.
Picture settings
Most TVs ship in a bright "showroom" mode. A few changes help at home:
- Choose a cinema, movie or calibrated mode for evening viewing.
- Turn down excessive brightness in a dim room.
- Turn off unnecessary motion processing if movement looks unnaturally smooth to you.
Pair these with Rock Player's dark appearance for a calm, consistent look in the evening.
Connecting the streaming device
HDMI
Plug your streaming stick or box into an HDMI port on the TV. If a stick is squeezed against the wall, an HDMI extender cable gives it breathing room and can improve Wi-Fi reception.
Power
Use the power adapter supplied with your device rather than a TV USB port where possible. Some TV USB ports do not provide enough power for steady operation.
Your home network
A steady connection makes the biggest difference to streaming.
- Use ethernet if you can. A cable from the router to your TV or box is usually the most reliable option.
- If you use Wi-Fi, place the router well. High, central and out of cabinets.
- Consider mesh Wi-Fi in larger homes where the router is far from the living room.
- Pause heavy downloads on other devices during viewing.
Sound
Built-in TV speakers have improved, but many living rooms benefit from:
- A soundbar placed below the screen, for clearer dialogue.
- A sound system connected through your TV, if you already own one.
Keep sound settings consistent so you are not adjusting the volume between programmes.
Comfort and convenience
- A home for the remote. A small tray or dish on the coffee table saves a lot of searching.
- Soft lighting behind the TV. A gentle light behind the screen can make evening viewing more comfortable.
- Cable tidiness. Clips or a cable sleeve keep the area behind the TV neat and safe.
Setting up Rock Player for the room
Once the hardware is in place:
- Open Rock Player and activate it with your device code at /activate.
- Create profiles for everyone who uses the living room TV, plus a shared family profile.
- Add your usual channels to Favourites.
- Choose dark or auto appearance.
- Explore Multiview for evenings when more than one thing is on.
Shared rooms, multiple screens
If the living room is one of several screens in your home, think about how many will be watching at the same time. As our FAQ explains:
One subscription is for one device at a time. You can log in on two devices, but you can watch on only one device at a time.
Choose the number of devices on your plan to match. See every option on our pricing section.
Enjoy the room
With the right screen position, a steady connection and Rock Player's big-screen interface, your living room is ready for evenings that stream solid like a rock. Download the app at /get and choose a plan at /#pricing.
