Keeping Rock Player Updated (and the "Allow from this source" Setting)

Rock Player improves over time, and automatic updates bring those improvements to your device without you having to reinstall anything. Because Rock Player is installed from our website rather than an app store, Android may ask for your permission the first time an update installs.
This guide explains what happens during an update, what that permission means, and what to do if something does not go to plan.
How automatic updates work
When a new version of Rock Player is ready, the app takes care of fetching it. Android then shows its standard installer so you can confirm the update. Once installed, Rock Player reopens on the new version with your settings and profiles intact.
You will often see an in-app message about new features, so you know what has changed.
Why Android asks for permission
Android protects your device by only letting approved apps install other apps. When you first installed Rock Player, you gave that permission to the app you used to download it - your browser or the Downloader app.
For automatic updates, Rock Player itself installs the new version. So the first time an update arrives, Android asks whether Rock Player is allowed to install apps.
The setting is called Allow from this source on most devices. Switching it on for Rock Player lets future updates install smoothly.
Allowing updates on Android TV and Google TV
- When the update prompt appears, select Settings.
- Switch on Allow from this source for Rock Player.
- Press Back and choose Install.
If you would rather set it up in advance, look in Settings > Apps > Security & restrictions (or Install unknown apps) and turn it on for Rock Player. Menu names vary slightly between TV makers.
Allowing updates on Fire TV and Firestick
- Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Developer options.
- Choose Install unknown apps.
- Switch Rock Player to On.
If you do not see Developer options, open Settings > My Fire TV > About, highlight your device name and press select several times until it says you are a developer.
Allowing updates on Android phones and tablets
- When the update prompt appears, tap Settings.
- Turn on Allow from this source for Rock Player.
- Tap back and tap Update or Install.
Is it safe to allow this?
The permission applies only to the app you choose. Allowing Rock Player to install updates means Rock Player can install its own new versions - it does not open your device to every app. You can review and change these permissions in your device settings at any time.
If an update does not install
"App not installed"
This usually means there is not enough free storage. Remove an app you do not use, then try the update again.
The prompt never appears
Make sure your device is online, then open Rock Player and give it a moment on the home screen. If an update is waiting, the prompt should follow.
The update keeps asking for permission
Check that Allow from this source is switched on for Rock Player itself, not only for your browser or Downloader.
Still stuck?
As a last resort, you can download the latest version from /get and install it over the top. Your device should keep your settings when installing a newer version of the same app.
Good update habits
- Keep some free storage. Updates need room to download and install.
- Accept updates promptly. Running the latest version means you benefit from the newest improvements.
- Keep the device online. Updates need a connection to download.
- Read in-app messages. They are the easiest way to learn about new features.
What stays the same after an update
People sometimes worry that updating will reset their setup. In normal use, installing a newer version of Rock Player over the existing app keeps your experience in place, so you can carry on with your profiles, Favourites, My List and appearance settings. If you ever choose to uninstall the app completely rather than update it, you may need to set things up again, so updating in place is the gentler route.
Why updates matter
Each update is an opportunity to make Rock Player steadier and more pleasant to use. Keeping current means your app continues to stream solid like a rock.
